What is involved in the consultation?
Dr Dowden's consultations are very intensive, detailed, and prolonged. Dr. Dowden's philosophy is that the patient plays a key role in making all of the decisions about her surgery. That then requires that the patient be extremely well-informed about breast augmentation. Consults are done in two separate parts on two separate days.
The first part is done with Dr. Dowden's nurse, and is primarily focused on working with the patient to determine what size the patient would like to be. The patient is instructed to bring a variety of clothes, outfits that would best show her desired new proportions. That consultation takes at least two hours and often more, and will include watching a videotape about important aspects of breast implants. Patients are strongly encouraged to bring someone with them to this consultation. At the end the nurse will give the patient several documents for her to review at home, and these documents are to be read also by the patients significant other.
The second part is done with Dr. Dowden. The patient is strongly encouraged to bring her significant other, who it is expected will have already read all of the documentation given to the patient at the Nurse Consult. The main focus of this consult is for Dr. Dowden to learn about the patient, her preferences, and her understanding and acceptance of all the information about breast implants. She does not have to decide at that time whether or not she will go ahead with augmentation, but she will need to decide on the details of how she would like the procedure done.
