What takes place during the consultation with Dr. Dowden?
The first part of a consultation is with Dr Dowden's nurse. The second part of the consultation process is done with Dr. Dowden himself. The patient is strongly encouraged to bring her significant other, who it is expected will have already read all of the documentation that was given to the patient at the Nurse Consult. She will have already finalized at the nurse consult the size she wishes to become.
The main focus of this second part of the consult is for Dr. Dowden to learn about the patient, her preferences, and her understanding, and for Dr. Dowden to know the degree of her acceptance of all the information, pro and con, about breast implants. She does not have to decide at the time of this consultation whether or not she will go ahead with augmentation, but she will need to decide on the details of how she would like the procedure done if she does choose to proceed.
This consultation with Dr. Dowden will begin with a review of the drawbacks of having implants. After having read and studied all the information, the patient will likely be well aware of all the information already, making this part of the session more like a review for her. But this is valuable, as it helps Dr. Dowden know the patient better, to gauge her acceptance of the drawbacks of having implants, and to assess the patient's comprehension and realistic outlook.
There will be an examination and physical assessment of the patient's breasts and proportions, measurements taken, and photographs done. Dr. Dowden will discuss in detail the operation and the recovery, along with the complications that could rarely occur.
The second major part of the consultation with Dr. Dowden will be the patient's decision-making. This is where, having already decided upon her new size, she will decide about over or under the muscle, about implant shape and texture, and choose the location for her incisions. All the pros and cons of each decision will be discussed at length to help her make her decision; however, Dr. Dowden will not decide for the patient.
This consultation is the opportunity for the patient and her significant other to decide whether or not the match or fit between her and Dr. Dowden's philosophy is good for her. Similarly, it provides Dr. Dowden enough information for him to decide the same thing, along with giving an indication of how well the patient complies with instructions and how well patient and doctor will be able to work together to achieve the patient's goals. If the match is not quite good, then the patient will be going to another plastic surgeon.
The patient will have previously been given the opportunity to look at the many albums of photos of Dr. Dowden's patients, during the Nurse Consult, so that will not be repeated at this time. The patient is encouraged to bring to this consultation photos of other women whose breasts she considers attractive, and near the end of the consultation will have the opportunity to show these to Dr. Dowden. If the patient wishes, and if other patients are willing, she can meet with these other patients who happen to be in the office for followup visits. At the very end of the consultation, there will be time for a question and answer session at which any remaining questions can be addressed.
Patients are encouraged to take their time and really think about whether or not breast augmentation is right for them. An estimate of the fees can be calculated and either given or mailed to the patient. If the patient is quite certain she wants to proceed, she and the nurse can look at dates, either in person or over the phone.
