Why is the choice of size emphasized so strongly?
Choice of size is one of the most difficult steps in preparing for breast augmentation. It is made more complex by the fact that women have an excellent inborn skill that serves them well in life, the ability to get used to new conditions very quickly. But that talent does have the down side of making it likely that soon after operation the woman may discover that she has grown so accustomed to her new size that she then wishes she had chosen a different size, most often larger. This then leads to the need for repeat operation, usually to put in larger implants, which often costs more than the original operation. In fact this problem is so common that across the USA, about 20% of women are re-operated within the first three years just to change implant size. In the 1980's Dr. Dowden became very concerned about that national average of 20% and was determined to find a way to greatly decrease that percentage for his own patients. It was because of that the he developed his current approach, with great emphasis upon size choice, and with all the techniques that will be covered with the patient during her Nurse Consult. By using these methods, Dr. Dowden has been able to achieve a reduction from the national average of 20% reoperation for size, down to less than 1% reoperation for size.
