Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about
breast enlargement:
Will there be other expenses in future years?
Yes:
1. There should be a yearly checkup with a plastic surgeon, and there is a small fee involved (less than having your hair done). Travel expenses, time off work, and child-care need to be considered as well.
2. Your mammograms with implants take longer to do and read (which is why implants are not causing delays in detecting cancers) and therefore they may cost a little more than regular mammograms. Insurance may require you to pay the extra costs.
3. Many plastic surgeons recommend that breast implant patients take an antibiotic on the day they have their teeth cleaned at the dentist, and that involves some expense.
4. Someday your implants are going to wear out, and even though the manufacturer gives some financial assistance, replacing them involves some expenses to you.
5. About 5% of women will require a future operation to treat hardening of the scar tissue ("capsular contracture"). Insurance does not cover the costs of this, nor are the costs included in the original surgery fees.
6. You may be advised to buy and take medications to help prevent hardening, (such as Vitamin E) depending upon your surgeon's preference.
7. A very small percentage of women actually have complications after their surgery, such as infection or bleeding, and these involve expenses to you that may not be covered by your health insurance.
8. If your own breast tissue changes size in the future, or if you did not properly choose your size to begin with, changing size in the future involves operation with associated costs to you.
Because of all these factors, we advise women considering implants to set aside some funds for the specific purpose of implant-related expenses in the future.
