What about winning breast implants as a free prize in a contest?
From time to time, one hears about free breast implant surgery being offered as the prize for winning some sort of contest or promotion. Patients need to be aware that this offer proves that the doctor is not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Giving surgical services as a prize in a contest violates the rules of ethics of Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons, so when you hear about this sort of thing, you need to fully investigate the credentials and qualifications of the doctor. All too often, with services that are free, you end up getting exactly your money's worth.
One way of determining whether the surgeon you have in mind is a Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is to call the American Board of Medical Specialties at 1-866-275-2267 and ask them, or another is to log onto the Board Certification Verification website, type in the first and last name of the surgeon you are checking, and then click the Submit button. If the name is returned with the statement: "Certificates include PLASTIC SURGERY" then he/she is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If that exact wording does not appear, then he/she is NOT certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Remember, any doctor can call himself a Plastic Surgeon, whether or not he really is! Most of the widely-publicized problems concerning plastic surgery operations were not actually done by Plastic Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Be extremely careful!
