What is an implant made of?
Breast implants are made of medical silicone (not silicon), a soft rubbery material, filled with either salt-water or silicone gel. (Experimental work has been done using various oils as the filling material, but this has not been successful to date, and these implants are not currently available.) Women without implants who are considering breast enlargement in the USA are eligible for the salt-water-filled implants if they are 18 or older, and for silicone-gel implants if they are 22 or older.
