Why must I have an adult stay with me the first night?
Having had an anesthetic can leave someone a little drowsy, and not fully clear-headed. Most of the strong pain medications add to these feelings. It is for this reason that patients are not allowed to drive or operate machinery while taking such medications. In addition, there is often some light-headedness the first night. Having someone with you can minimize the number of times you need to get up and walk around. Also, if you feel at all dizzy, it adds to your security and safety to have someone who can walk with you and support you as needed. That person can also keep track of your medications and remind you when to take them. Having someone stay with you all the first night is a requirement, not an option, if you want Dr Dowden to do your operation.
