What takes place during the Nurse Consult?
The Nurse Consult is the first part of the consultation process. It is done by the patient meeting with Dr. Dowden's nurse, and is primarily focused on working with the patient to determine what size the patient would like to be. That consultation takes at least two hours and often more, and will include watching a videotape about important aspects of breast implants. The patient is instructed to bring to the consult a variety of clothes, outfits that would best show her desired new proportions. Patients are also strongly encouraged to bring someone with them to this consultation.
If the patient wishes to look at before-and-after photos of Dr. Dowden's work, she will be given the opportunity to view hundreds of these patients in the many before-and-after photo albums. She will be given the implant manufacturer's brochures and warranty information. The patient will spend time reviewing a compilation of photographs illustrating different degrees of upper breast definition to help her begin to develop a clear idea of her goals in that regard.
This consultation is also the patient's opportunity to learn whether or not the philosophy of Dr. Dowden's approach to breast augmentation is a good match with her temperament and personality. If she is a person who expects to just be told what will be done, without her participating in the decision-making process, she will not be able to have a good working relationship with Dr. Dowden's practice. Most women, however, find this consultation with the nurse both informative and enjoyable. If she does not, then she will have to decide whether Dr. Dowden's practice is for her or not.
At the end the nurse will give the patient several documents for her to review at home, and these documents are to be read also by the patient's significant other.
