Many studies have shown that breast cancer is actually slightly less frequent in women who have implants than in women who do not have implants. Some plastic surgeons believe that implants may have a protective effect against developing breast cancer. That explanation is not widely accepted, and instead there may be several other reasons for the lower chance of breast cancer in implanted women.
Some plastic surgeons think that an implant in front of the muscle could serve as a barrier to spread, that is, if a cancer were to develop, the implant would block it from reaching the muscle and spreading that way, in contrast to under-the-muscle implants which would not have that extra protection. There may be some validity to that, based on some unpublished microscopic findings, but there is an absence of data on that question.
The statistics regarding breast cancer, implants and mammograms are excellent, and all indicate that implants are not causing breast cancers to be missed, and that the accuracy of implant mammograms is the same whether the implants are over or under the muscle. It is important to note that it is easier and faster to perform and read under the muscle mammograms than overs - but despite theoretical calculations to the contrary, the accuracy is the same and cancers are not being missed either over or under the muscle.
Laboratory rats are different from humans. It has been known for decades that 25 percent of laboratory rats will form an unusual kind of cancer in response to any foreign objects including pacemakers, heart valves, artificial joints, implants, and even sutures. That type of cancer is extraordinarily rare in humans, and has never been seen with breast implants.
