Isn't breast enlargement just a response to male standards of beauty?
Some people choose to look at it that way, and then may get very upset about it. There is a small but very vocal group of people, mostly women, who strongly oppose breast augmentation for that very reason - because it reflects values and standards that have their origins in the male concept of physical female beauty. These people believe that society should be changed, to make external female beauty completely irrelevant. One step in that direction would be to make breast implants impossible for women to get. They are working on that.
Archeological and other historical evidence makes it very clear that the female breast has been a major issue in society for thousands of years. A woman's choices of clothing, hairstyle, makeup, or cosmetic surgery are made for the woman herself, but ultimately one could view these as a response to the beauty standards originally set by a male-dominated society over the centuries.
Nevertheless, that is the way our society is at this time; breast augmentation is the way some women choose to deal with the world as they find it. Nearly all of the women who request breast enlargement do so because they themselves want the result; it is rare for a woman to want to have the surgery just because her partner wants her to, and reputable plastic surgeons would decline to operate under that circumstance.
